NEGROS ORIENTAL(PIA) — The Provincial Prosecution Office (PPO) has received 28 drug cases filed from different municipalities in the month of July with over 10,000 drug users and pushers who voluntarily surrendered in the province.
PPO Administrative Officer V Carmencita Dipaling said cases are expected to increase with the ongoing intensified anti-drug campaign of the Philippine National Police (PNP) dubbed as ‘Oplan TokHang’.
Of the 28 cases filed, 15 were charged in violation of Section 5 (Sale of Dangerous Drugs) and 13 in violation of Section 11 (Possession of Dangerous Drugs) under Republic Act 9165 or Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.
In the same period, the Special Drug Court Branch 30 has a total of eight cases resolved with six convictions under Section 5 and two acquittals, reported Atty. Joanna Utzurrum in a regular meeting of Negros Oriental Drug Abuse Prevention Council (NORDAPC).
However, Utzurrum said before the new administration took over in June, the sala of Judge Crescencio Tan Jr. of Branch 30 has already resolved 11 cases with eight convictions, two acquittals and one dismissed due to lack of merits.
Through Project Double Barrel and Oplan TokHang, the number of suspected drug users and pushers who surrendered have been increasing with the continuous efforts of the PNP to eliminate the illegal drug activities in the province.
