NEGROS ORIENTAL (PIA) – The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) here is inviting college students to apply for its Junior Level Science Scholarship (JLSS) Program.
DOST-Negros Oriental Project Assistant Kriszel Joy Gaitan announced in a briefing with members of the Association of Negros Oriental Public Information Officers (ANOPIO) that the application for the scholarship program is now open.
JLSS is a program under the new Republic Act 10612 or the Fast-Tracked Science and Technology Scholarship Act of 2013.
However, this scholarship is only offered to third year college students enrolled in priority science and technology as well as engineering and mathematics courses set by DOST-Science Education Institute (DSOT-SEI).
DOST-SEI is the agency in charge of the scholarships offered by the department.
Said priority courses include science, biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, education courses with majors on the aforementioned fields of study, agriculture, engineering courses which include mechanical, electrical, geodetic, computer except civil engineering, computer science and information technology.
Gaitan said interested applicants must fill out an application form at the DOST office or through DOST-SEI website: http://www.sei.dost.gov.ph and bring with them a 1 x 1 ID picture and a certified true copy of grades for their first and second year levels.
Applicants must have a general weighted average at least 83 percent with no failing grade.
Incentives include P10,000 tuition fee assistance per semester, P5,000 book allowance, monthly stipend, clothing allowance, transportation allowance, and health insurance.
Beneficiaries of the scholarship program must teach in any secondary schools as stated by law.
“The scholarship can be availed in all universities in the province, but their service obligation (is) they will teach after graduation. It doesn’t matter if you did not take an education related course, you can teach the in Senior High School equivalent on number of the years you enjoyed the scholarships,” she said.
“There is a contract stating their service obligation that they have to teach after graduation. Through this program, they already have a slot in DepEd,” Gaitan added.
Deadline of the filing of application is on Sept. 9 and examination date is on October 16, 2016.
