Silliman High marks centennial celebration

DUMAGUETE CITY (PIA) — More than a thousand Silliman High School alumni are expected to be back in Dumaguete City to participate in the centennial celebration in August for the 115th Silliman University Founder’s Day.

A series of activities have been lined up for the SUHS centennial celebration with the theme “Via Veritas Vita”.

According to Atty. Grace Sumalpong, SUHS Centennial Committee chair, the 100th year of SUHS this year is based on the first diploma granted in 1916.

One of the highlights of the event is a gala dinner-for-a-cause on August 26 to raise funds for the SUHS Teachers Retirement Assistance Medical fund (STREAM).

Part of the proceeds of the gala dinner is intended for the STREAM or SUHS teachers who need medical assistance who may avail of the funds aside from the EPCALM, programs committee chair Girlie Bernardez said.

STREAM and the Erwin P. Cabanag Adult Leukemia Memorial Foundation (EPCALM) are the beneficiaries of the funds that will be raised.

Another highlights of the celebration is called “An August Rush”, which features a series of running events and a tree-planting activity for retired teachers and leukemia patients.

Brenda Boladola, principal of the SU Junior High School, said batch 1976 coordinated with the Department of Education -Negros Island Region (DepEd-NIR) for a Youth Environmental Congress on August 6 at Silliman Gym.

“SUHS students with other high schoolers will have an opportunity to participate in the advocacy in the environmental preservation at the same time for physical fitness as we celebrate the High School Centennial with run,” said Boladola.

The congress will culminate with a fun run on August 13 and a fellowship among high schoolers in Metro Dumaguete as well as in the province.

Activities for the centennial celebration include Ultramarathon on August 20; Book and Art Fair on August 22 to 24; Centennial Fiesta, Aug. 25; Centennial Forest Tree Planting, Aug. 27; and Sunrise Service, Aug 28.

To symbolize the 100 years of Silliman High, a 100-kilometer Ultramarathon on Aug. 20.

About 200 distance runners from all over the country and abroad are expected to join this open competition.

Categories are 100K Solo, 100K Relay for two runners, 100K Relay for four runners, and a Virtual Run for runners who wish to run any of the three categories outside Dumaguete. (rmn/jct/PIA7-Negros Oriental/This article was originally published at PIA website on July 7, 2016)
