NEGROS ORIENTAL (PIA) – The Consumer Advocates Inc., (CAI), a consumer organization in Negros Oriental, has conducted a seminar-workshop on strengthening consumer organizations for a group of consumers in Bacolod City on June 16.
CAI President Erlinda Basmayor led her group in engaging the participants composed of 15 consumers and sectoral representatives in various discussions focused at capacity-building and reinforcing the role of consumer organizations in both consumer education and empowerment.
CAI officer Mark Garcia said the activity was in response to the challenge of Department of Trade and Industry (DTI)-Negros Island Region Director Aster Caberte for CAI to assist in further capacitating other consumer groups in the Negros Island Region and Bohol.
The Visayas leg was a partnership among CAI, DTI-Negros Oriental through Consumer Welfare Division Chief Angeline Gonzales, and DTI-Negros Occidental through Trade and Industry Development Specialist Reginald Hudierez.
Participants included Andrea Zolayver, president of the Consumer Association of Bacolod City; Luis Ledemsa Jr., president of the Villamonte Persons with Disability Association; Basilisa Atienza, president of the Federation of Senior Citizen Association of Bacolod; Carolina Minase from the Women’s Family Organization; and Glenn Burgos from the Center for Negros Development of the University of St. La Salle.
“In the next days, the group agreed to meet again to discuss how to reinforce the presence of a solid consumer group in Bacolod and work closely with DTI on its eventual accreditation,” Garcia said.
Garcia was one of the CAI officers who facilitated the seminar-workshop along with their President Linda Basmayor and other members Toby Dichoso, Genalyn Bertolde, and Nona Longa-Locsin.
CAI is the first consumer organization in Central Visayas to be accredited by DTI. (rmn/ral/PIA7-Negros Oriental/with reports from Mark Garcia/This article was first published at PIA website on June 21, 2016)
