DUMAGUETE CITY (PIA) – The Philippine-California Advanced Research Institutes (PCARI) is inviting Negrenses to apply for its post-graduate scholarship programs.
PCARI, in cooperation with Commission on Higher Education in Negros Island Regional office (CHED-NIR), held a scholarship forum in the city today to inform the public especially those who are part of the faculty and research staff of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Dumaguete about their scholarship programs.
This is part of the nationwide information roadshow conducted by PCARI to attract interested applicants to its 200 scholarship slots.
Representatives from various HEIs in the city attended the forum.
PCARI is a research and development project undertaken by the U.S. and Philippine government to enhance the skills of faculty, students and staff of Philippine universities through scholarships, trainings and research partnerships with one of the top universities in U.S. which is University of California.
PCARI’s post graduate scholarships covers master’s degrees, PH.D. Degrees, and post-doctoral studies in the Philippines or in any of the three campuses of University of California (Berkeley, San Francisco and Davis).
“We really wanted to go out and tell everyone about this because we want everyone to have this opportunity,” said Kristianne Peralta, project technical staff for communications of PCARI.
Applicants must be Filipino citizens not more than 45 years old, no criminal record, admitted to CHED-identified universities where they will take their post-graduate studies, and research proposals should be aligned with PCARI priority areas and a degree on relevant discipline.
“For now we have two major focus areas: one is s health, anything health-related including relevant sciences like biology, chemistry and we also have engineering,” Peralta adds.
However, Peralta also noted that for this year, PCARI is also accepting applicants availing scholarships for agriculture related studies but research proposals must be related to either health or engineering.
Peralta explained that PCARI is giving more focus on health and engineering-related disciplines to address the country’s need for sustainable and world-class infrastructure as well as in response to the nation’s societal problems on health and device innovation.
PCARI’s scholarship grants include degree programs (local/foreign), master’s degree program with thesis or project, full Ph.D. Program, sandwich programs for master’s and doctoral degrees, non-degree programs (local/foreign), and postdoctoral study award.
Benefits of the scholarship grants include free tuition and other school fees, transportation allowance, living allowance or stipend, dissemination or conference attendance grant, book allowance, travel or Medical Insurance, application and other Fees, thesis, dissertation, special Project Grant Startup or Research Grant (for engineering degree programs).
Another advantage of the scholarship program is that scholars have the chance to undergo three to six months of training in any of the UC campuses regardless if they are taking post graduate studies in the PCARI accredited schools or abroad.
PCARRI accredited schools for now are University of the Philippines campuses in Manila and in Diliman Quezon City as well as the Ateneo De Manila University.
There is no deadline for the application for scholarship. Interested applicants can coordinate with the CHED-NIR office located at Legaspi St., Dumaguete City or through telephone number 421- 0887 for the application process and requirements.
Meanwhile, Dr. Dennis Rebueno, officer-in-charge and chief education specialist of CHED-NIR, reiterated the invitation to all qualified Negrenses to apply for the said scholarship program.
The official also underscored that the scholarship plays a vital role in the development of the people particularly youth who would like to pursue higher education.
“We would like to take this opportunity in inviting qualified faculty members and graduates and all those who would like to pursue higher education in the University of California in Berkeley to kindly apply now. CHED will take care of your application documents, you just have to submit it,” Rebueno said.
