175 runners join100km Ultramarathon in Negros Oriental

NEGROS ORIENTAL (PIA)  —  Some 175 ultra runners from Visayas, Mindanao, and Luzon are expected to join the 103 km. run from Bayawan City to Dumaguete City on December 12 to 13, this year.

In its third year of ultra running dubbed ‘Negros Oriental 100Km Ultramarathon’, organizers Metro Dumaguete Runners Club (MDRC) together with Dumaguete Amateur Riders and Striders (DARS) Club and the Negros Oriental Sports Development Program (NOSDEP) continue its advocacy of promoting not only physical fitness but also sports tourism and environmental protection.

Race director Paultom Paras of NOSDEP said the runner-participants who registered online come from Cebu City, Negros Occidental and Oriental, Cagayan de Oro, Iloilo, Lanao, Aklan, Masbate Western Samar, and Zamboanga, among others.

Paras said the run will start at 5:00 p.m. from Bayawan City on Dec. 12 and finish it on Dec. 13 at 5:00 p.m. at the Capitol in Dumaguete City where an awarding will be done for the finishers.

“This year, the oldest runner is aged 65 while the youngest is 19 years old but runners are categorized accordingly of which there are six couples to run side-by-side,” said Paras.

Event manager Irma Faith Pal of the Negros Oriental 100KM Ultramarathon said all is set for this 3rd year of ultra running with the assistance of the Philippine National Police, Philippine Army, and local government units (LGUs).

Communication and medical groups, among others, are in place for the duration of the two-day event.

Race director Maripol Rotea-Tecson, one of the couples who will also run for the third time, urged the participant-runners to bring their own water jug for refill to lessen the waste of using plastic bottles that may be thrown along the highway.

With the assistance of the barangays along the highway and other organizations, water stations will be placed every two kilometers, sports drinks and chocolates will also be provided every ten kilometers, and food will be served every 20 kilometers to all runner-participants.
