DUMAGUETE CITY, June 25 (PIA) — The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) in Negros Oriental thru its Director General and Secretary Joel Villanueva handed over P20M worth of scholarship vouchers to 17 schools in the province recently to benefit some 2,123 students for its Training for Work Scholarship (TWSP) Program.
Villanueva said, the scholarship programs support students who take technical vocation (TechVoc) on automotive manufacturing, metals and engineering, construction, airconditioning and refrigeration, electronics, agriculture and fishery, processed food and beverage, health services, ICT, tourism, among others.
In his visit to Dumaguete City, Villanueva said he personally promotes the advocacy of TESDA to support Filipino workers through skills development and their employability in various industries including job choices.
In this way, more students will be aware on these tech-voc opportunities especially when they cannot afford a degree course, Villanueva explained.
TESDA had also given out certificates of commitments to nine recipients of the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP)-Negros Oriental chapter under the TWSP TESDA-identified public and private Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions.
TESDA and KBP recently forged a partnership through a memorandum of agreement that broadcast media workers or their family members may avail of TESDA’s skills training.
Of the 268 KBP recipients nationwide, nine came from Negros Oriental. The secretary cited the employment of tech-voc graduates is increasing in 2013 with 65% nationwide.
The TESDA scholar-graduates are expected to be absorbed either in wage-employment or self-employment sectors.
Of the 3,756 graduates last year in Negros Oriental, 2,920 are already employed in and outside of the country.
