DUMAGUETE CITY, February 5 (PIA) — The provincial social welfare office in Negros Oriental underscored the need for proper identification of persons with disabilities (PWDs) in the province.

Provincial Social Welfare Officer Alice Lagarde said that a masterlist of all PWDs in the province is important so that they can be given proper identification.

She encouraged the PWDs in the different municipalities and barangays to register in their municipal health offices so that they can be included in the official list.

Lagarde informed that before a PWD will be issued an official ID she/he has to undergo assessment from a Medical Doctor authorized to assess the type of disability.

However, the Department of Health (DOH) which spearheaded the identification of PWDs using a particular tool five years ago, reiterated that it would be proper to conduct a training for the purpose of having a standardized assessment tool in identifying PWDs.

Largarde also disclosed that DSWD already issued IDs to PWDs who are in their masterlist and this can be used for them to discounts in purchasing medicines and other basic items.

PWDs are also entitled to a 20% discount privilege just like the senior citizens.

Free hospitalization will also be given to PWDs based on the family’s income.

Meanwhile, the Provincial Council on Disability Affairs (PCDA) of Negros Oriental and Provincial Federation of Persons with Disabilities (PFPD) will hold a training/seminar for PWDs on the prevention, early detection and intervention of disabilities among children on May 22 to 23, 2014.

This activity is in line with Proclamation No. 688 which declares the period 2013 to 2022 as the Philippine Decade of “Make the Right Real for PWDs”. (rmn/LPP/PIA-7 Negros Oriental)
