DOST-NegOr calls on college sophomores to apply for scholarships

DUMAGUETE CITY (PIA)–The Department of Science and Technology (DOST)- Negros Oriental has encouraged second year college students to apply for the newly-opened 2013 Science & Technology Scholarships for sophomores.

According to DOST-NegOr information officer Roslyn Tambago  interested students from Silliman University (SU) and Negros Oriental State University (NORSU) may now avail of the scholarship.

Tambago said DOST offers two types of scholarships, RA 7687 and Merit Scholarship Programs for the poor but talented and deserving Filipino students with general weighted average (GWA) of 2.5 or 85 percent or better in science, math and engineering subjects.

The applicants should have no failing grade during the first year level, she added.

The applicant must not have pending application as immigrant in any foreign country and a resident of the municipality/city for the last four years with good moral character and in good health.

The priority courses that scholars can enroll include: Agriculture, Agricultural Biotechnology; Agricultural Chemistry; Agricultural Engineering; Applied Mathematics; Applied Physics; Biochemistry; Biology; Ceramics Engineering; Chemistry with Applied Computer System; Chemistry with Materials Science and Engineering; Chemical Engineering; Chemistry; Civil Engineering; Computer Engineering; Computer Science;

The scholars may also take Electrical Engineering; Electronics and Communications Engineering; Environmental Science; Fisheries; Food Technology; Forestry; Geology; Geodetic Engineering; Geological Science and Engineering; Industrial Engineering; Information Technology; Manufacturing Engineering; Materials Engineering; Mathematics; Mechanical Engineering; Metallurgical Engineering; Mining Engineering; Molecular Biology and Biotechnology; Physics; Physics with Applied Computer System; Physics with Materials Science and Engineering; and Science/Mathematics Teaching.

An achievement test will be conducted which includes Logical Reasoning, Engineering, Sciences, Mathematics and English. Two different tests will be administered for Engineering students and another set for those taking up basic sciences and other applied science courses.

Deadline of submission of application is on October 18, while the comprehensive examination scheduled November 24. The venue of examination is yet to be identified.
