GUIHULNGAN CITY, Negros Oriental, September 11 (PIA) – Four alleged members of the rebel group New People’s Army (NPA) were captured by Philippine Army soldiers in a recent encounter in Guihulngan City.

A report from the 302nd Infantry Brigade said the encounter happened around 1:00 pm of Sept. 6 in the vicinity of Sitio Hinobaan in Brgy. Plagatasanon and Sitio Cansayawan in Brgy. Linantuyan in Guihulngan City.

Soldiers from the 1st Scout Ranger Battalion of the Philippine Army fought with approximately 20 rebels while conducting clearing operations in the area.

The four NPA members were caught after they were abandoned by their comrades who fled from the battle. The four were turned over to Guihulngan City Police at around 10:00 pm where proper charges were filed against them.

Army troops also recovered one M-14 rifle with one magazine containing live ammunitions, two hand grenades, seven backpacks with jungle hammocks, medical kits, food stuffs and subversive documents of high intelligence value that are in the possession of the rebels.

Meanwhile, Gen. Francisco Patrimonio, Commander of the Army’s 302nd Infantry Battalion based in Negros Oriental assured the public that because of this the situations in the two barangays and in nearby areas are now back to normal.

“The situation in Brgys Plagatasanon and Linantuyan and the nearby barangays are back to normal. Clearing operations in the hinterlands is still ongoing. We make sure that the encounter will be contained away from the populated areas and that unnecessary loss of lives and destruction of property will be avoided,” Patrimonio said.
